Magento powers rich, complex stores run by technical teams. That complexity has a price: in our analyses, it is the platform where the measured gaps were the most uniform.
A Magento store assembles layers: the core, a theme, extensions and custom developments. Faceted navigation, filters that reload the page and mini-carts are rich mechanisms, and each can break the keyboard journey or what screen readers announce.
The typical sensitive spots
- Filters and faceted navigation: result updates must be announced, and every control keyboard operable.
- Ageing themes inherited from early versions, never re-audited since going live.
- Mini-cart and login windows: focus must enter, stay, then return cleanly.
- Product images: back-office alt text fields stay unevenly filled as soon as the catalogue grows.
What our analyses show
Seven Magento stores appear in our 2026 panels, three scan series with distinct perimeters and identical rules. All seven showed at least one critical or serious non-conformity on their homepage, and six of the seven at least one critical. The sample is modest and we say so; its uniformity, however, deserves to be faced.
Where to start
On a platform run by a technical team, the lever is integration into the existing workflow: a measured assessment, fixes prioritised by severity in the backlog, then continuous monitoring to prevent regressions at every release.

Why do Magento stores accumulate so many gaps?
By accumulation of layers: a theme installed years ago, extensions added as needs arose, custom developments never re-audited. No single layer is at fault on its own; the assembly, however, has often never been measured as a whole.
Should you wait for a redesign to address accessibility?
No. The most serious defects (alternatives, contrast, field labels, focus) can be fixed in the existing theme, in prioritised batches. Waiting for the redesign leaves the site exposed for months; measuring first, on the contrary, feeds the redesign with the real list of issues.
