WCAG 2.2: what is new compared to 2.1

Version 2.2 adds criteria focused on focus, touch targets and input assistance. An overview.

WCAG 2.2 extends version 2.1 without replacing it: all 2.1 criteria remain valid, and 2.2 adds new ones. They mainly target navigation, focus and input assistance.

Better protected focus

New criteria require the focused element to stay sufficiently visible and not be hidden by other elements, such as a sticky bar or an overlapping window.

More comfortable touch targets

Buttons and links must offer a large enough target, or enough spacing, to be activated without difficulty, especially on mobile.

Less cognitive effort

Several criteria reduce the burden on the user: not asking again for information already provided, not relying on memory alone, easing authentication processes.

What to remember

If you target WCAG 2.2 level AA, you cover the bulk of current expectations, including the technical basis of the EAA through EN 301 549.
