European Accessibility Act (EAA)
European directive (EU) 2019/882 that requires many digital products and services sold to EU consumers to be accessible, applicable since 28 June 2025.
The European Accessibility Act (EAA) is Directive (EU) 2019/882. It harmonises accessibility requirements across the European Union for a wide range of consumer-facing digital products and services.
What the EAA requires
For websites and apps, the technical reference is the EN 301 549 standard, which mirrors the WCAG level AA criteria. In practice, a covered service must be perceivable and usable by people with disabilities.
Who is concerned
E-commerce, banking services, telecommunications, transport, e-books and many consumer-facing services. The directive also applies to non-EU businesses selling to European consumers. Some service microenterprises benefit from partial exemptions.
The EAA has applied since 28 June 2025 across all 27 member states.
